Boxman

Have a Brew with Boxman Studios

Introducing the East Coast’s first-ever retail and dining venue built from modified shipping containers. Located in Somerville, Massachusetts, SOMBLOX is anchoring Assembly Row, the area’s newest shopping, dining, live/work and entertainment destination developed, owned and operated by, Federal Realty Investment Trust. The shipping container architecture pays homage to Somerville’s industrial past, once home to a Ford Motor Plant, a steel factory, and a repair center for Boston’s first railroad system.
The one-of-a-kind destination is set at the corner of Canal Street and Grand Union Boulevard on the neighborhood’s northeast edge.  The venue is comprised of four 20-foot modified shipping containers that create three unique spaces. Two flexible retail spaces are defined each by one container, while the other two containers will make up a bar and eatery that will be occupied bySomerville Brewing Company’s American Fresh Taproom.
The Taproom has multiple keg coolers and kitchen equipment, serving Somerville Brewing Company’s newest creations as well as food from various local eateries. All of the container spaces are ADA accessible, complete with electrical and lighting, while the Taproom includes additional features such as a grease trap and sinks for the kitchen aspect of the build.
“We really embraced the open environment of the space.” Said Architectural Designer, Taylor Bishal. “We’ve created large hinged windows and storefront doors that can be easily open or shut depending on weather conditions, and we’ve embraced the standard barn doors on the back of the containers to create a more defined space while also allowing tenants to easily close up shop and keep wares secure.”
Using bright colors, rope lights, and a courtyard layout, the environment intends to blend the feeling of a trendy beer garden, with the comfort of sitting in your own backyard.
We’re proud to be taking the lead in the increasingly growing trend of shipping container architecture. We can’t wait to see this unique space come to life in Somerville within Assembly Row.
