Index says Walgreens, Amazon, Pizza Hut and eBay have the best retail apps

Research group ARC 360 has published its report "The State of the U.S. Retail Apps Economy," which aims to identify the best- and worst-performing retail apps by consumer review. The company said it started with the NRF top 100 list, added 25 additional retailers that it identified, then stripped away any that either didn't have both an iOS and Android app, or didn't have a sufficient number of user reviews on the various app stores.
They then aggregated all of the consumer reviews of the 74 apps that qualified, and mathematically turned those star ratings across app stores into a single numerical rating, from 0 to 100.
Four brands stood out, having a score of at least 60 and at least 20,000 app store ratings: Walgreens, Amazon, Pizza Hut and eBay. The two at the bottom of the list were AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless.
These were the highest and lowest rated in each segment:
Segment | Best | Worst |
Apparel | Bath & Body Works | Banana Republic |
Department Stores | Nordstrom | Belk |
Drug Stores | Walgreens | Rite Aid |
Electronics & Entertainment | Barnes & Noble | Toys "R" Us |
Health & Beauty | Bath & Body Works | Sephora |
Hobby & Crafts | Hobby Lobby | Michaels |
Home Goods | IKEA | Bed Bath & Beyond |
Home Improvement | Home Depot | Lowe's |
Mass Merchants | Walmart | Costco |
Office Supply | Office Depot | Staples |
Sporting Goods | REI | Cabela's |
Supermarkets | Whole Foods | Albertsons |
Writing in his analysis, report author Ben Gray says apps that receive poor ratings need to fundamentally redraw their focus on "serving customers in their mobile moments," while apps that receive excellent ratings need to engage users early when making improvements or changes, to stay ahead of issues that might bring that rating down at some point.
